Teleprompting Tips for President Obama
While he may do a great job in correctly reading his speech, which is the main reason for using the presidential prompter system, his audience knows and is all too aware of the fact he is reading every word. Although the words may have great meaning, the 2-mirror style appears to be mechanical and robotic, and can degrade the significance or sincerity of his presentation. The Line By Line 5 Point Teleprompting Technique What President Obama should do instead is use the Line by Line Teleprompting 5-point technique (See image below). Using the two teleprompting mirrors as his anchor, he now must learn how to deviate his look off the two mirrors for reading small sections of the script. What this first accomplishes is that he is looking at the entire crowd he is presenting to and not just two lines of sight. More importantly, it now looks more like Obama is not reading from the prompter mirrors as he is spending time looking at other spots than his two prompting mirrors. You might be asking, how does he read the words if he is not looking at them? The key is taking advantage of natural pauses that can occur at the beginning and end of each sentence. Effective presentation uses natural pauses for appropriate emphasis. So if Obama knows that he is coming to the end of a sentence, he can turn his head away from one of the mirrors to finish the last words of that sentence. Then coming back to the other teleprompter mirror for the beginning of the next sentence, he can then stay there until the end of the second sentence, where again he can finish the last five or so words of the sentence looking at a different point of the 5-point positions. For variety, Obama could then pause enough to look at the beginning of the next sentence on one mirror, but deliver it directly to the middle of the audience, where there is no mirror. There is no more effective way to connect to your audience than delivering straight to the audience in that number three position where there is no mirror. Knowing Your Subject Matter For Effective Teleprompter Presentation There are some uncertainties introduced by using the 5-point system. It assumes that the presenter knows the subject matter and can memorize between five to ten words that he can quickly see on the mirrors but then deliver looking away from the mirrors. Also, another technique that adds more spontaneity to a presentation is ad libbing. This is another opportunity to look away from the mirrors, but it's also "uncontrolled" speech. Can the president deliver those words accurately and effectively without changing the meaning or tone of his scripted speech? So, while president Obama must face important national issues like the economy, wars, and global climate change, he can improve his credibility when delivering long, scripted speeches by utilizing Line by Line's 5-point Presidential prompting technique.
